All rights reserved.2 Distributed Voic Server Overview For IP Office R6.0, remote IP Offices in the Small Community Network can be associated with another voic server in addition to the centralized voic server. The additional distributed server then provides all voic services (except message storage and collection) for that IP Office. This requires the remote IP Office to have licenses for voic operation and the features it requires. While the distributed server does message recording, it forwards all messages to the central voic server. The messages are transferred between systems using an SMTP/MIME mail format to encode both the voice part of the message and additional message details.

All the voic servers must be configured for similar operation, for example they must use the same mailbox modes (Intuity or IP Office) and have the same housekeeping settings.

6 © 2009 Avaya Inc. All rights reserved. Additional Server Requirements SMTP must be installed on both the Central and Distributed voic servers. IIS must be installed on both the Central and Distributed voic servers so there is a Mail Drop folder for exchanging files between servers. 6 The Mail Server field must point to the fully qualified machine name (e.g. vmserver.au.com) and not the IP address of the local machine. Ensure the port used by SMTP (25) is not blocked by any security or firewall settings.
7 © 2009 Avaya Inc. All rights reserved.7 SMTP Testing An SMTP server is required for synchronization between the Central and Backup voic servers. Start a command line window by selecting Start | Run and entering cmd. Type Telnet 25. The expected response is an SMTP reply code 220 indicating that the service is ready. For example: 220 ESMTP server ready. If a positive response is received, enter quit and press [Enter] to close the telnet connection to the SMTP server. Test the connection in both directions between the Central and Distributed voic servers.

9 © 2009 Avaya Inc. All rights reserved.9 Verify Connections In the Voic Pro Client on the Central server, Centralized Voic will be displayed in the upper right hand corner of the screen. – On the Distributed server, Distributed Voic will be displayed. – The Type column will display Distributed on the Centralized Server. – The Result column will display; Started, In Progress or Up-To- Date.
