There are two general methods available: Non-network-aware and Network-aware. Non-network-aware uses locations-based call admission control in centralized deployments and gatekeeper call admission control in distributed deployments. Network-aware uses RSVP to improve central knowledge about available WAN resources in centralized deployments. AAR applies to centralized deployments and allows calls to be rerouted through the PSTN when Cisco Unified CallManager blocks a call due to insufficient WAN bandwidth.

RSVP extends call admission control with RSVP agent configuration. H.323 gatekeeper is needed for gatekeeper-based call admission control. In centralized deployments, the SRST router provides a subset of Cisco Unified CallManager call-processing features to both SCCP and SIP phones at a remote location in the event of a Cisco Unified CallManager or IP WAN failure.
