S14-3 PAT325, Section 14, February 2004 Copyright 2004 MSC.Software Corporation COMPATIBILITY OF MESH IN MSC.PATRAN AND MSC.LAM MODELER n MSC.Laminate Modeler stores a definition of the mesh in the layup file when this file is first created n This is used to store ply properties for each element n If you change your mesh (in MSC.Patran) then the layup file becomes incompatible with the mesh in the database n Opening a layup file with an incompatible mesh gives the following error message
S14-4 PAT325, Section 14, February 2004 Copyright 2004 MSC.Software Corporation IMPORTING PLIES ONTO A NEW MESH n Can remesh as follows u Close the old Layup file u Remesh in MSC.Patran as required u Create in MSC.LM a new Layup file u Import the plies from the old Layup file n MSC.Laminate Modeler projects the draping results from old mesh onto the new mesh u This causes approximation and quantum effects in the new Layup. A ply with a straight edge may become one where the corresponding edge is jagged. u The Angle and Distance tolerances control how far or rotated a new element has to be relative to an original one(s) for MSC.LM to map the ply
S14-5 PAT325, Section 14, February 2004 Copyright 2004 MSC.Software Corporation IMPORTING A MODEL FROM A LAYUP FILE n Can import the mesh and materials from a Layup file into an empty MSC.Patran database u Run MSC.Patran and create an empty database u Run MSC.Laminate Modeler u Open the required Layup file, and continue past the warning message; answer Yes u In MSC.Laminate Modeler go to Import/Model/File l Select Mesh to import nodes and elements l Select Create Group if you want a group to be created with the imported elements in it l Select Materials to import materials u Continue working as usual

S14-7 PAT325, Section 14, February 2004 Copyright 2004 MSC.Software Corporation DATA TRANSFER BETWEEN ANALYSIS AND DESIGN n Analysts use CAE systems such as MSC.Patran n Designers use CAD systems such as Catia n Each tool is optimized for task n Necessitates data transfer n Model begins in analysis for sizing u Zone model for initial global analysis u Ply model for detailed analysis n Model transferred to design for physical detailing u Ply drop-off, etc. n Model transferred back to analysis for certification u Ply model

S14-12 PAT325, Section 14, February 2004 Copyright 2004 MSC.Software Corporation EXAMPLE: IMPORTING FiberSIM PLIES n FiberSIM generates a Tria3 mesh for each ply from warp and fill lines resulting from its draping simulation n A Layup file is generated for each ply (*fml), together with a directory file listing all plies in a layup (*fmd) n These Layup files are imported into the MSC.Laminate Modeler. A ply is mapped onto the current analysis mesh to generate an equivalent ply for the current mesh. Plies are added to the layup in the order in which they are imported. n These imported plies are handled like any other ply in MSC.Laminate Modeler. For example, laminates reflecting the fiber orientations can be generated in the usual manner.
