2 Geographical position of the UK The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland occupies a territory of the British Isles (5500 islands) with the total area of sq.km. The UK is situated off the north- western coast of Europe between the Atlantic Ocean and the North Sea. George/s Channel and the North Channel, the English Channel and the Strait of Dover. The UK consists of four parts and every part has its national emblem.
3 One cant describe the country without mentioning its surface. The island of Great Britain can be divided into two main regions: Lowland Britain and Highland Britain. Lowlands comprise southern and eastern England. Highlands include Scotland, Wales, the Pennines, the Lake District, and the southern peninsula of Britain. Many rivers are flowing through Great Britain, such as the longest Severen with its tributaries, the swiftest Spey, the busiest Thames, etc. All parts of Great Britain are worth seeing.
4 The capitals of the United Kingdom is London. The official language is English, but some people continue speaking their mother tongue: Scottish in western Scotland, Welsh in northern and central Wales, and Irish in Northern Ireland. The population of the UK is over 57 million people. The flag of the UK is made up of three crosses of the patron saints: the upright red against a white back-ground – St.George of England, the white diagonal against a blue background – St. Andrew of Scotland, the red diagonal against a white background – St. Patrick of Northern Ireland. The English people have the habit of naming their national flag the Union Jack
5 The UK is a constitutional monarchy, the head of the State is the Queen who reigns with the support of Parliament. Parliament is made up of the House of Commons, the House of Lords. The House of Commons has 650 members who are elected by the people of the UK, called Members of Parliament, each representing a constituency. The House of Lords has over 1000 members. The government brings bills to the House of Commons, where they are discussed by MPs. The bills then go to the House of Lords. The House of Lords can suggest changes to a bill, but does not have the power to stop it from becoming law. When the bills come back to the Commons, MPs vote on them, and if they are passed they are signed by the Queen and become part of British law. 6 The West End, the centre of London, is word seeing. It includes historical palaces, famous parks, large hotels and shops. Rich people enjoy spending their free time and money there.
