Copyright DASSAULT SYSTEMES Editing a part may mean for example modifying the density of the part or the part number (its properties), but most often editing consists in modifying the sketches or the features composing the part. This operation can be done at any time. To edit a sketch, double-click on it in the Specification Tree Editing Parts 1 To edit a feature through definition dialog boxes in order to redefine the parameters of your choice: Double-click the feature ( a circular pattern ) to be edited (in the specification tree or in the geometry area). The Circular Pattern Definition dialog box appears 2 Modify Parameters

Copyright DASSAULT SYSTEMES You will get familiar with using the Specification Tree The Specification Tree
Copyright DASSAULT SYSTEMES What About the Specification Tree? CATIA V5 provides a generic specification modeler which lets you view and modify objects (features, sketches, … ) The hierarchy of features is called the Specification Tree. Its structure varies with the kind of document being edited.12 Design Process: Pad.1 before Pocket.1 Part Number
Copyright DASSAULT SYSTEMES Hide and Show the Tree Keyboard Shortcut to Hide the Specification Tree : F3 key to hide/show the Tree To display Specification Tree, click again on F3 key Specification Tree
Copyright DASSAULT SYSTEMES Activate and Deactivate the Tree Keyboard Shortcut to Manipulate Objects : [Shift] + F3 to activate Tree or Objects Or Position the cursor anywhere on the History Tree branch and click on MB1 Part is active Part is inactive
Copyright DASSAULT SYSTEMES Position the cursor on a tree branch. The cursor changes to a pointing finger 1 Click mouse button 1 (MB1) and drag the mouse to move the tree The cursor changes to a small hand 2 Moving the Tree Click up arrow to display the top of the tree Click down arrow to display the bottom of the tree Drag the bar up and down as you wish Using the ScrollbarNot Using the Scrollbar Moving the tree anywhere When the size of the tree exceeds the window you can use the scrollbar to display the tree downward or upward
Copyright DASSAULT SYSTEMES Zoom in and out as for the geometry (see job aid) 1 2 To reactivate the geometry, click again on a tree branch Expand / Shrink Click on + to expand, on - to shrink the tree Expanding & Zooming the Tree Geometry dimmed while zooming the tree Click mouse button 1 (MB1) on a tree branch Note that you can use the scrollbar to display the top or bottom of the tree

Copyright DASSAULT SYSTEMES Scan the Design Process There is a powerful tool to show the Part History step by step in order to visualize design process. 1 Select Edit / Scan or Define In Work Object 2 You can select forward at each step to scan all steps
Copyright DASSAULT SYSTEMES Define in Work Object (1/2) With the Specification Tree, you can insert Features 1 2 Select a feature on the Tree with MB1 Select with MB3, Define in Work Object option Note that CATIA, in the same Body, does not consider and display features which are spelling after the active feature defined by Define in Work Object
Copyright DASSAULT SYSTEMES Define in Work Object (2/2) If you insert a new Sketch, it is positioned after the active feature defined by Define in Work Object. 3
Copyright DASSAULT SYSTEMES You will learn how to take advantage of the compass to manipulate objects Moving Objects Using the Compass
Copyright DASSAULT SYSTEMES The compass is a powerful tool to move and manipulate objects, especially in Assembly Design, FreeStyle, and Digital Mockup products Base of the compass (or privileged plane) Default is XY plane Default orientation of the compass is parallel to reference axis system XYZ Default location of compass is the top right corner of the screen When to use it ? To Pan, Rotate Goemetry in 3D To deform surfaces like patches and define cutting plane in FreeStyle To move components in an assembly and in Digital Mockup To move and rotate elements in the Sketcher, parallel to the sketch plane What is the Compass ?
Copyright DASSAULT SYSTEMES Rotation XZ translation X TranslationZ translation 1 Select one of the compass axis or plane About Z About Y Translation Free rotation (Similar to rotating with the mouse) Just grab the top point of the compass and move it Simple Use of the Compass (1/2) Drag the cursor. The geometry moves accordingly 2 Normal to compass axis (Similar to Normal View) Just select the desired letter (x, y or z)
Copyright DASSAULT SYSTEMES To position the Compass at its default location and with its default orientation, you can either drag it and drop it onto the reference Axis System (bottom right corner) or select the Reset Compass command in the View menu (very useful when the compass is not visible). Simple Use of the Compass (2/2) Drag around Z axis…. Note that the default location and orientation of the Part does not change z z y y X X
Copyright DASSAULT SYSTEMES To position the Compass at its default location and with its default orientation, you can either drag it and drop it onto the reference Axis System (bottom right corner) or select the Reset Compass command in the View menu (very useful when the compass is not visible). Drop the Compass onto a Component (1/3) Click the red square of the compass 1 3 Compass is now green Drag the red square of the compass, 2 4 Select the desired axis (or plane) of the compass and drag it Drop the compass onto a component, 5 Result The component move relative to the origin.
Copyright DASSAULT SYSTEMES The default location and orientation of the Part changes relative to the origin when you drop the compass onto a component Drop the Compass onto a Component (2/3) Initial orientation of the Part Drop the compass onto a component and drag around one axis, Default orientation change Final orientation of the Part
Copyright DASSAULT SYSTEMES Drop the Compass onto a Component (3/3) 1 Click and drag the red square of the compass 2 Drop the compass onto a component, 3 Select the Feature you wants to move 4 Select one element of the Compass (axis,plane..) 5 Result You can move specific features with the compass
Copyright DASSAULT SYSTEMES To position the compass at its initial place, clik on empty background, on the XYZ axis system, or drag it and drop it onto its anchor point. If you do not see the compass, click on the View > Reset compass menu option (no element selected) Click and drag the red square of the compass, 1 2 Green compass means the component can be moved Moving One Component in an Assembly Drop the compass onto a component, Move the component using the compass axes and planes 3 You can move and drag instances on the Assembly with the Compass
