In VoIP networks, analog signals have to be converted into digital format. DSPs provide this conversion by sampling, quantization, encoding, and optional compression. Digitized voice is encapsulated into RTP, UDP, and IP headers. To reduce bandwidth requirements, these headers can be compressed on a link-by-link basis. The total bandwidth required for a VoIP call depends on the codec, packetization period, and encapsulation overhead. Based on the network topology and size, different IP telephony deployment models can be utilized.
