3 Useful Information Tatarstan is situated in the central part of Russia. It covers the area of 68,000 sq. kms. The capital of the Republic is Kazan. The Declaration of State Sovereignty was signed on the 30 th of August, There are 43 districts in Tatarstan. There are two official languages that are Russian and Tatar.

4 Flag There are three colors: green, white and red. Green color means rebirth. White color means purity. Red color means energy, strength and life.

5 State Emblem The State Emblem is a picture of a winged snow leopard with a shield on its side that means economic strength of people of Tatarstan. Here you can see the same colors that are on the flag of the Republic. Eight petals of an aster mean longevity. The wings mean protection on the earth and in the sky.

7 Natural Resources The republic is rich in natural resources such as coal, gas and oil.

8 HOLIDAYS There are many public holidays that are celebrated in Tatarstan every year: New Years Day, Womens day, victory Day, October Day and others.

9 National Holidays There is a traditional June festival Sabantui – the celebration of the plough

10 National Holidays There are a lot of competitions during Sabantui. The most exciting are the horse races, the national wrestling and climbing up a high pole.

11 National Holidays Another traditional holiday is Nauruz that means New Year Day. This festival is very old and it takes place on the 21 st of March when the daytime is as long as night. The holiday symbolizes the end of darkness and the victory of the light over the evil.
