1 Guy Fawkes Night
2 The history Guy Fawkes Night, also known as Bonfire Night or Firework Night, is an annual festival which takes place on 5 November, primarily in Great Britain. Its history begins with the events of 5 November Guy Fawkes was a member of a group of British Catholics who were involved in a plot to kill King James I on 5 November The group planned to use gunpowder to blow up the House of Parliament when the King was there. They placed barrels with gunpowder under the House of Lords. Nevertheless, they did not have chance to carry out their plan because the King discovered it. Guy Fawkes was caught guarding the barrels of gunpowder in a cellar below the Parliament. He was arrested and later executed. 3 The portrait of Guy Fawkes
4 How it is celebrated These days on November 5 many people in Britain celebrate Guy Fawkes Night by building huge bonfires and lighting fireworks. Preparations for Bonfire Night celebrations include making a dummy of Guy Fawkes, which is called the Guy. Some children even keep up an old tradition of walking in the street, carrying the Guy they have just made, and beg passersby for a penny for the Guy. The kids use the money to buy fireworks for the evening festivities. On the night itself, Guy is placed on the top of the bonfire, which is set alight, and fireworks displays fill the sky. The extent of the celebrations and the size of the bonfire varies from one community to the next. Lewes, in the South of England, is famous for its Bonfire Night festivities and constantly attracts thousands of people each year to participate.
