3 Washington is the capital of the United States of America. It is located between the states of Virginia and Maryland on the Potomac River.

4 Washington was named after the first US President George Washington. He selected the place for the capital and Pierre L'Enfant a French engineer designed the city.

5 Washington was first settled in 1790 and since 1800 it has been the federal capital.

Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight, O'er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming.
