4 Tea arrive in Great Britain In 1597 tea was first mentioned in English culture. The 1 st batch of tea was imported in Great Britain by ship.
5 Anna, the 17 th Duchess of Bedford Anna began inviting guests to join her for a cup of tea and some sweets in the afternoon, in order to fill the long gap between breakfast and late dinners. This pause for tea became a fashionable social event. During the 1880's upper-class and society women would change into long gowns, gloves and hats for their afternoon tea. Anna was a lifelong friend of Queen Victoria.
