2 Kazakhcultureand traditions Kazakh culture and traditions The Kazakh people are rich in tradition. From birth through old age and death, every step of their lives has historically been marked with celebration. Even their funeral ceremonies have their own special symbolism.
3 Kazakh Yurt If you were in Kazakhstan, but didnt see the white Kazakh yurt on green meadows of jaylyau, you can not feel and enjoy the real life of Kazakhs and their culture. Yurt is one of the oldest and greatest inventions of Eurasian nomads. At all times Yurt was a practical and convenient accommodation. Kazakh yurt is a product of traditional Kazakhstan culture based on the ecological balance and sustainability, a product of culture that doesnt seek to dominate and change the nature, but seeks to learn its laws and follow them in a daily life.
4 Kazakh national clothes Shapan The shapan is mans outer robe made of velvet, velveteen or velour. Its decorated with patterns in traditional style. Usually the shapan is presented to a noble and honored guests as a sight of ones special favor and attention. Takhia The takhia is a mens everyday cap which covers the top and back of the head.
5 Kazakh music and musical instruments The Kazakhs loves the art of wordplay and their akyns (poets), who improvise at public competitions (aitys) accompanied by Kazakh stringed musical instruments: the dombra or the kobyz.
6 Kazakh traditional food Кazakh specialities are meat and sour-milk dishes: besbarmak (meat and noodles), kazy, karta, shuzhuk, zhal, zhaya (types of horse meat sausage), baursaks (savoury doughnuts), kurt (а hard curd cheese), kozhe (milk soup), irim-shik(curds) andairan (ayoghurt drink).
7 Kazakh national games National games: these are usually performed on horseback and are an opportunity to witness the Kazakhs outstanding riding skills. Kazaksha kures (Kazakh wrestling), baiga (horse racing over 25, 50, or 100 km), kokpar (a sort of polo game played with a dead goat), kyz-kuu (catch the girl) and alty bakan (six-pole swing).
8 Nauryz is a very important holiday for Kazakhs, which marks the beginning of a new year. It is celebrated several days starting from 21st of March, the day of the spring equinox. Nauryz means new day, it is celebrated in the Great Steppes from ancient times. Nauryz symbolizes goodness and wealth, happiness and love and a great friendship day, since this holiday is common for many nations. During Nauryz celebrations, past offences are forgiven and forgotten and everybody makes a wish to leave all badness behind and bring renewal in the New Year. Nauryz – Kazakh new year
