2 London is the capital city of England and of the United Kingdom situated on the Thames river, the largest city in Britain and one of the largest cities in the world.
3 HISTORY London began on two small patches of dry land in the middle of a marsh on the north bank of the Thames. That was before the Romans came. 10 LONDON AS A CULTURAL CENTRE There are many museums in London. One of them is the Tate Gallery in Millmank, which presents modern masters of England and France. There are some fine examples of modern sculpture. Its collection of French Impressionists is marvellous. There is the Victoria and Albert Museum in Brompton Road. It has an outstanding collection of the applied arts of all countries and periods.
11 Political System of Great Britain The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is a constitutional monarchy. Britain does not have a written constitution. Parliament is the most important authority in Britain. The House of Commons consists of Members of Parliament. General elections are held every five years. Ail citizens aged 18 have the right to vote. There are few political parties in Britain. The main ones are: the Conservative Party, the Labor Party.
12 Music in Great Britain The 20th century saw a renaissance in British music with the work of composers such as Delius, Hoist, Elgar, Vaughan Williams, Walton, Tippett, Maxwell Davies and Britten. Britten in particular came to be regarded as a specially "English" composer, partly through the English themes of several of his operas but also through the folk songs and church music that provided the inspiration for many of his other works.
