The theme: Acute laryngitis Checked by:Akhmetkalyeva Shynar 212 group.GMF Prepared by: Sagingalieva A.D Semei, 2011
Plan: Laryngitis is an inflammation of the larynx. Etiologies of acute laryngitis Symptoms Symptoms Diagnosis Treatment
Laryngitis is an inflammation of the larynx. It causes hoarse voice or the complete loss of the voice because of irritation to the vocal folds (vocal cords). Dysphonia is the medical term for a vocal disorder, of which laryngitis is one cause.
Laryngeal paralysis The vocal cord paralysis may be organic or functional. The abductors and adductors and supplied by the recurrent laryngeal nerves arising from the vague. Completely paralyzed vocal cord is still midway between abduction and adduction (body position). abductor paralysis is always organic in nature and can be unilateral or bilateral. Moreover pure abductor paralysis is always bilateral and is functional in nature. This is often seen in hysteria.
Causes of organic laryngeal paralysis laryngeal nerve is common in mediasternal tumors, aneurysms and enlargement of the left atrium that occurs in mitrial stenosis. These include basilar artery insufficiency, bulbar poliomyelitis, motor neuron disease, syringobulbia and tumors.
Rhinovir us Parainfluenza Virus Virus Blastomyco sis Tuberculosis Atypical infections Haemophilus InfluenzaHaemophilus Influenzae Moraxella catarrhalis
1. Upper respiratory tract infections 2. Rarely neck space infections / parapharyngeal abscess / retropharyngeal abscess can cause acute laryngitis 3. Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GERD) can cause posterior glottic and arytenoid infection 4. Non-specific inflammation like sarcoidosis / Wegner's granulomatosis can also cause laryngitis 5. Allergy 6. Inhalation of dusts / fumes
Is the first symptom noticed, and perhaps slight chilliness, together with a prickling or tickling sensation in the throat. There is a hacking cough and expectoration of a small amount of thick secretion. There may be slight difficulty in breathing and some pain in swallowing. The patient feels generally pretty well, and is troubled chiefly by impairment of the voice, which is either husky, reduced to a mere whisper, or entirely lost. This condition lasts for some days or, rarely, even weeks.
1. Change / loss of voice 2. Sore throat and otalgia 3. Difficult / painful swallow 4. Tender larynx with or without cervical adenopathy 5. Difficulty in breathing / stridor (rare)
The following measures can help lessen the intensity of the laryngitis while waiting for the condition to resolve: Inhaling humidified air promotes moisture of the upper airway, helping to clear secretions and exudate. Complete voice rest is suggested, although this recommendation is nearly impossible to follow. If the patient must speak, soft sighing phonation is best. Prevailing data do not support the use of antihistamines and corticosteroids. If a patient uses these medications, he or she may have the false impression that the laryngitis is resolving and may continue to use his or her voice, leading to further insult.
Although acute laryngitis itself is not infectious, sometimes the underlying causes for it are. For instance, viral infections such as the common cold (which can cause acute laryngitis) can be spread from person to person, so it is important to practice good hygiene and minimize your exposure to people who may be suffering from a cold or the flu.
