ELECTRIC CHARGE
You will: Characterize electric charge; Explain charging by friction and induction. Give examples of positive and negative effects of charging.
WHAT IS HAPPENING IN THE VIDEO AND WHY?
Electrification of hair. Balloon electrification. Comb electrification. Electrification of a tissue paper. Friction.
Electric charge is a physical quantity and its SI unit is the Coulomb [C]. In practice, we use microcoulomb = µC = C and nanocoulomb = nC = C e= × C The law of conservation of charge : q 1+ q 2+ q 3….+ q n =constant
AN ATOM CONSISTS OF 3 MAIN PARTICLES: Protons: positive [plus] charges Neutrons: neutral [zero] particles of atom Electrons: negative charges [minus] Nucleus consists of Neutron and Proton
The charges can attract [pull] and repel [push] each other. Like [same] charges repel each other. Unlike [not same] charges attract each other. This force is called electrostatic force.
When numbers of electrons and protons are the same an object is neutral. Negatively charged object has more electrons than protons. Positively charged object has more protons than electrons.
Terminology: Charge- Nucleus- Electrostatic- Positive- Negative- Attract- Repel- Like charges- Unlike charges-
