2 THE 13 COLONIES 13 colonies that came together to form the United States: New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia
3 The beginning of settlement of America – 1000 A.D. - Leif Ericson, a Viking seaman, explored the east coast of North America and sighted Newfoundland, establishing a short-lived settlement there. – Christopher Columbus made the first of four voyages to the New World. – The first permanent European colony in North America is founded at St. Augustine (Florida) by the Spanish. – The first English child, Virginia Dare, is born in Roanoke, August 18.
4 ENGLISH COLONIAL EXPANSION business ventures The English colonies were business ventures. They provided: – an outlet for Englands surplus population; – (in some cases) more religious freedom than England did; – primary purpose to make money – primary purpose was to make money for their sponsors.
5 THE TOBACCO COLONIES starvation and disease to just 32 survivors Jamestown is founded in Virginia by the colonists of the London Company. By the end of the year, starvation and disease reduce the original 105 settlers to just 32 survivors. Capt. John Smith is captured by Native American Chief Powhatan and saved from death by the chief's daughter, Pocahontas.
6 THE NEW ENGLAND COLONIES – November 9 – November 9, the Mayflower ship lands at Cape Cod, Massachusetts, with 101 colonists. establishinga form of local government agree to abide to cooperate – On November 11, the Mayflower Compact is signed by the 41 men, establishing a form of local government in which the colonists agree to abide by majority rule and to cooperate for the general good of the colony. The Compact sets the precedent for other colonies as they set up governments.
7 THE MIDDLE COLONIES 1664 New York The Dutch New Netherland colony becomes English New York after Gov. Peter Stuyvesant surrenders to the British following a naval blockade.
8 THE SOUTHERN COLONIES The Carolina colony was much less cosmopolitan. Slavery Slavery played an important role in the development of the Carolina colony.
9 Conclusion In 1700, there were about 250,000 European and African settlers in North Americas thirteen English colonies. By 1775, on the eve of revolution, there were nearly 2.5 million. These colonists did not have much in common, but they were able to band together and fight for their independence.
