4 The International Committee of the Red Cross The International Committee of the Red Cross is an impartial, neutral and independent organization whose exclusively humanitarian mission is to protect the lives and dignity of victims of armed conflict and other situations of violence and to provide them with assistance.
5 Legal base Geneva Conventions: (revised in 1949) -wounded and sick on the battlefield (1864) -victims of war at sea (1949) -prisoners of war(1929) -protect civilians living under enemy control (1949). Protocols (1977) to the Conventions -applicable to international armed conflicts -applicable to non-international armed conflicts -adoption of an additional distinctive emblem (2005)
6 Financial Base The overall budget of the ICRC for 2015 stands at 1.76 billion Swiss Francs (1.85 billion USD). The ICRC is funded by voluntary contributions. - States party to the Geneva Conventions (84% of the budget) - national Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, - supranational organizations (such as the European Commission) - public and private sources.
7 The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies to promote humanitarian principles and values to provide relief assistance in emergency situations of large magnitude, such as natural disasters to support the national societies with disaster preparedness through the education of voluntary members and the provision of equipment and relief supplies to support local health care projects to support the national societies with youth- related activities
8 Financial Base CONTRIBUTIONS - the national societies - members of the IFRC - exact amount of contributions * established by the Finance Commission and approved by the General Assembly.
9 National Red Cross and Red Crescent societies Almost in every state – 190 societies "Conditions for recognition of National Societies. – article 4 of Statute of Movement bound by the laws of its home country
