I N THE NORTH THE USA IS BORDERED BY C ANADA, AND IN THE SOUTH IT BORDERS ON M EXICO.I T IS WASHED BY THE A TLANTIC O CEAN IN THE E AST AND BY THE P ACIFIC O CEAN IN THE W EST.
3 T HE COUNTRY IS COMPOSED OF 50 STATES TODAY. T HE COUNTRY IS RICH IN COAL, OIL, IRON, AND MINERALS. T HE U NITED S TATES ECONOMY IS HIGHLY DEVELOPED. T HE U NITED S TATES IS ONE OF THE LEADING COUNTRIES IN THE WORLD ECONOMY. T HE PEOPLE OF THE U NITED S TATES ARE A MIXTURE OF MANY DIFFERENT NATIONALITIES.
4 T HE LAND AREA OF THE CONTIGUOUS U NITED S TATES IS 2,959,064 SQUARE MILES
5 T HE USA IS WASHED BY THE P ACIFIC, THE A TLANTIC O CEAN, BY THE C ARIBBEAN S EA AND T HE G ULF OF M EXICO
6 T HE U NITED S TATES, WITH ITS LARGE SIZE AND GEOGRAPHIC VARIETY, INCLUDES MOST CLIMATE TYPES.
7 T O THE EAST THE CLIMATE RANGES FROM HUMID CONTINENTAL IN THE NORTH TO HUMID SUBTROPICAL IN THE SOUTH. T HE SOUTHERN TIP OF F LORIDA IS TROPICAL, AS IS H AWAII. T HE G REAT P LAINS WEST OF THE 100 TH MERIDIAN ARE SEMI - ARID. M UCH OF THE W ESTERN MOUNTAINS ARE ALPINE. T HE CLIMATE IS ARID IN THE G REAT B ASIN, DESERT IN THE S OUTHWEST, M EDITERRANEAN IN COASTAL C ALIFORNIA, AND OCEANIC IN COASTAL O REGON AND W ASHINGTON AND SOUTHERN A LASKA. M OST OF A LASKA IS SUBARCTIC OR POLAR.
8 E XTREME WEATHER IS NOT UNCOMMON THE STATES BORDERING THE G ULF OF M EXICO ARE PRONE TO HURRICANES, AND MOST OF THE WORLD ' S TORNADOES OCCUR WITHIN THE COUNTRY, MAINLY IN THE M IDWEST ' S T ORNADO A LLEY.
9 T HERE ARE 58 NATIONAL PARKS AND HUNDREDS OF OTHER FEDERALLY MANAGED PARKS, FORESTS, AND WILDERNESS AREAS. M OST OF THIS IS PROTECTED, THOUGH SOME IS LEASED FOR OIL AND GAS DRILLING, MINING, LOGGING, OR CATTLE RANCHING.
10 R IVERS Mississipi begins in the north and ends in the gulf of Mexico. The Colorado river rises in the Rocky Mountains.
11 T HE R OCKY M OUNTAINS STRETCH FROM A LASKA DOWN ALMOST TO THE SOUTH OF THE COUNTRY.
12 T HE A PPALACHIANS ARE IN THE EAST AND RUN FROM NORTH TO SOUTH.
13 T HE G RAND C ANYON The Colorado River formed the Grand Canyon over millions of years.
14 T HE CANYON IS ONE MILE DEEP AND 200 MILES LONG.
