2 Geographical position Canada occupies the northern part of the continent of North America (with an exception of Alaska) and a number of islands. It stretchers from the Great Lakes in the south to the Arctic Circle in the north. Its western coast is washed by the Pacific Ocean and its eastern coast is washed by the Atlantic Ocean.
3 Mountains The Rocky Mountains run along the Pacific coast. There are also mountains which run parallel to Canada`s east coast and in Labrador, a peninsula on the east coast of Canada. 11 The political system of Canada Canada is a federal state within the Commonwealth of Nations. Formally the head of the state is the King or Queen of the U.K. Represented by the Governor-General. The Federal Parliament consists of the Senate and the House of Commons. The members of the House of Commons are elected for a period of five years. The members of the Senate are appointed by the Governor-General.
