3 The university was founded in It is situated near Boston in Massachusetts. In 1630 the university was called after John Harvard, a former British minister, who emigrated to America and gifted the university half of his property.
4 At first the university was called a college, as it gave only religious education. Besides, Harvard college trained Indian leaders for missionary needs. The college became a university at the beginning of the 19th century, when medical and judicial faculties joined the college.

7 Yale University was founded on the 9 th of October, 1701, in New Heaven, Connecticut as a Royal College of Connecticut Colony. In 1718 the college was named after an English merchant Yale, who gifted the college 560 pounds and 417 books.
