2 The east coast of Australia was discovered by Captain Cook in At this time England was having many social problems. Unemployment was high. Crime was one of the greatest problems. Englands solution to crowded prisons was to send prisoners to the far colonies. They could work off their prison sentences as labourers in the new colonies and eventually earn their freedom. In 1788 Captain Arthur Phillip commanded eleven ships to Australia. About 750 of the 1000 people on the ships were convicts. Great Britain claimed all of Australia in Captain James Cook
3 In 1851 gold was discovered about 300 km west of Sydney. People rushed to the gold fields to find their fortunes. This attracted robbers called bushrangers. Ned Kelly was a famous bushranger. He was a very clever outlaw. Ned Kelly

5 Australia is the flattest of all the continents. It is mostly a great plain with mountains in the east and south-east. The centre of the continent is occupied by the deserts. The larges of them are: - the Great Sandy Desert - the Victoria Desert. There are few rivers and lakes in Australia. 7 Australian national flag consists of five white stars of the so-called Southern Cross and the white Commonwealth star on a blue background with a Union Jack in canton. Australian endemic flora and fauna are reflected in the countrys coat of arms by the symbols of Australias animals and plants: kangaroo and emu and a twig of wattle. The Australia national anthem was adopted in the 1970s. It is called Advance Australia Fair.

10 Canberra is the capital of Australia. It is not the largest city. Sydney and Melbourne are much larger. Canberra is a relatively young, planned capital city located in the Australian Capital Territory. Population of Canberra is approximately 325,000. Most of the continent is sunny most of the year. Australian climate is suitable for sheep-farming.
