2 ROBERT BURNS (1759 – 1796)
3 On the 25 th of January, 1759, a son was born to William Burness. He was called Robert.
4 His father William was a gardener on a small estate; he could understand people. And Robert learned from his father to understand people.
5 Roberts mother knew many old songs and ballads of the countryside. In the evenings she told the children folk-tales.
6 The family was very poor, but the father wanted to give the children the best education. When the children were young, he began to teach them to read and write.
7 When Robert was six, he and his brother Gilbert went to school. But a few months later the school was closed. But father and some people engaged another teacher.
8 He was 18, but ever clever. The teacher lived with each family in turn and taught the children Robert interested him more than his other pupils.
9 Roberts mother, Agnes, would delight him by singing traditional Scots songs and a distant cousin, Betty Davidson, told him the tales about ghosts and witches.

11 Robert began to write when he was 15. When his first book of poems was published his name changed from Burness to Burns. He wrote poems in the dialect of his country. Many of Burns poems were put on music. In his songs he showed his dislike for the rich, but sympathy for the poor and made fun of the church.
13 The song Auld Lang Syne was written in Scottish dialect to a traditional Scottish melody. According to the old tradition this song is sung on New Years Eve, when friends gather to see in the New Year.
