1 SAINT-PETERSBURG SAINT-PETERSBURG
2 St. Petersburg is the second largest city in Russia and one of the most beautiful cities in the world. It was founded in 1703 by Peter the Great at the « Window in Europe ». St. Petersburg was the capital of Russia from 1712 till Now St. Petersburg is an industrial, cultural and scientific centre. There are over 80 museums, such as Pushkin Museum Flat, Russian Museum and Winter Palace etc.
4 Winter Palace The Winter Palace was built on the left bank of the Neva which had been earlier chosen for his modest structures by Peter the Great himself. Its project was designed by Francesco Bartolomeo Rastrelli, an architect of genius. In later years of eighteenth century the state rooms and living apartaments were redesigned by the architect Yury Velten.
5 The new rooms and halls were designed by Ivan Starov and Giacomo Quarenghi. After fire of 1837 had erased practically all the interiors, many of them were restored, under the supervision of Vasily Stasov and Alexander Briullov, to their former appearance or designed in a new fashion. 6 The history of each, even smaller, rooms of the Winter Palace are pages in the history of count and daily life of the Imperial family. Even factual information gives an idea of the huge size of the building: it is about 200 metres long, 10 metres wide and 30 metres tall. The first of them is known at the Small Hermitage and was intented for works of art amassed by Catherine the Great. Each exhibit here, down to the smallest item, is priceless. The collection of the Hermitage boasts a number of really unique works known all over world. The museum collections contain works of art dating from Classical Antiquity, masterpieces of painting by Leonardo da Vinci, Giorgione, Titian, Rembrandt, El Greco, Paul Rubens, Anthony van Dyck and Jacob Jordaens. 12 It is hardly possible to imagine a kind of art that is not represented in the Hermitage. The Hermitage complex is a veritable spiritual universe created in the course of the times by means of godly gifts named creativity and art.
