4 The topic of my project is «Sport is my life». I am sure sport helps us to be healthy. I think people can buy different things but they cannot buy health. Sport helps us to be strong and slim, to look beautiful and to be in good health. That s why I chose this topic of my project. Sport is popular all over the world. Sport is very popular in Russia too. More than 30 million people go to sports centers. There are a lot of different sports that are very popular in Russia.

5 Football has been played in one form or another for hundred of years. First it was a very rude and hard game. There were no rules. But since 1863 it has been played with proper rules. That year the Football Association was started. Its first job was to get a set of rules for all teams, by the end of the 19th century almost every town had its own team. The modern game was introduced to other countries by British soldiers, seamen and businessmen.

6 Nowadays, nearly every country has its own football team. One of the main competitions of the football season is the FA Cup. It has been held every May at the famous Wembley stadium in London since the middle of the 19th century.

7 Ice hockey is one of the most popular among winter sports. Russian players have been taking part in world championships since 1954 and have won the world titles on many occasions.

8 In 1988 we celebrated the hundredth anniversary of athletics. 7.5 million people participated in track-and- field competitions. Russian sportsmen are the European, World and Olympic records holders in different disciplines. Other popular team games are basketball and volleyball. More than 6 million people play volleyball in physical culture teams and sporting clubs. The mens and womens teams won Olympic, European and World Champions titles not once. A little less people play basketball (4.2 million). Soviet players first took part in the Olympic contests at the 1952 Games in Helsinki. Since then they have been among the Olympic prize winners for several times.

9 Alina Kabaeva is a Russian sportwoman in art gymnastics. Her birthday is on the 12th of May in The first success came to Alina Kabaeva at the International Competitions of Moscow in In 1998 she took part in Goodwill Games in the USA and won four gold and silver medals. Then there were Japan, Holland, Austria and the girl was always a success. She won the European Championship and the World Cup Final in She took the third place in the Olympic Games in Sydney.

10 Yevgeny Kafelnikov a successful Russian tennis player, a twice repeated winner of The Big Helmet` (Rollan Garros – 96 and Australian Open – 99). In 1993 he skipped from the 104th place to the eleventh. Now he is one of the best 10 tennis players in the world. He participates in all the tournaments held in the world. In 1998 he took part in more than 30 tournaments. He is the gold medal champion of the Olympic Games in Sydney in 2000.

11 Sport is an important part of my life. I like to take part in sport competitions. I play in our school basketball team. I think that it helps me in different ways. First of all sport builds character. It teaches to win and to lose. More than that it makes men out of boys and women out of girls. Besides it teaches you about life. And it is a good way to meet people, even from other countries. But for it you must be a good sportsman.

12 My favourite sport is chess. I like watching different types of sports and games, but most of all I like playing chess. I can play chess all the year round. To tell the truth, I have played chess seriously since six years. I think that chess makes us cleverer. We have already visited many cities, took part in various competitions, and won a large number of prizes of which I am very proud. To tell the truth, once I hope to become a well-known chess player.

13 Conclusion Sport is popular all over the world. First of all some people think it is just in fashion to do sport and to keep fit. Also people say that it is interesting to take a chance and to take part in different competitions. When you go to a sports centre or a sports club you often meet friends, talk with them, so we can say that sport is interesting because you enjoy playing and running. Besides for those who are very successful in sport, it is the way to earn money, win the prize and become strong, energetic and healthy, lose or gain weight, look athletic and cool and of course to have a good time.
