H.323 is an extremely flexible gateway signaling protocol that needs a complex dial peer configuration. Implementing MGCP as a gateway signaling protocol within a Cisco Unified CallManager environment is quite simple. SIP is ideal as a gateway signaling protocol when connecting to a VoIP service provider with a simple trunk or as an SIP UA.
