S8-3 PAT325, Section 8, February 2004 Copyright 2004 MSC.Software Corporation TRANSFORMING RESULTS BACK TO PLY SORT When the solver(MSC.Nastran) analysis results are linked to or read into MSC.Patran they are in laminate material format. Any stress results displayed in MSC.Patran correspond to a single layer(e.g. Layer 1), and not a ply. It is not possible to display stresses that correspond to the plies. So, it is needed to obtain the stresses for the plies.

S8-4 PAT325, Section 8, February 2004 Copyright 2004 MSC.Software Corporation TRANSFORMING RESULTS n After linking the result file to MSC.Patran, the results can be translated to a ply-wise representation. n This is not done automatically, but is done at user request in MSC.Laminate Modeler. n The load case, subcase and layered result must be chosen.

S8-5 PAT325, Section 8, February 2004 Copyright 2004 MSC.Software Corporation EXAMPLE: SIMPLE MODEL n A composite plate is reinforced with two strips of material, oriented perpendicular to each other n It is clamped along the left edge n And two point loads are applied to the free edge. n The FE shell model is shown

S8-6 PAT325, Section 8, February 2004 Copyright 2004 MSC.Software Corporation n Traditional modeling u Two Materials and three layered property sets are created in MSC.Patran. The property sets are created on an element layer basics, with no physical counterpart. n MSC.Laminate Modeler modeling u One material and no properties are created in Patran.Three plies are created with different directions and application regions in MSC.Laminate Modeler. They are stacked to form a layup. EXAMPLE: SIMPLE MODEL (Cont.)

S8-8 PAT325, Section 8, February 2004 Copyright 2004 MSC.Software Corporation SUBSEQUENT MODIFICATIONS TO PLIES n Discussion u It is desired to change the thickness of one of the reinforcement patches u Also, it is desired to add another set of reinforcement patches on the bottom of the plate n What needs to be done do to deal with the two problems ?
