The Coast-of-Arms of Belgorod Region The Coat-of –arms of Belgorod region (approved in 1996) descends from the flag granted to Belgorod Infantry Regiment by Peter І.The picture symbolizes the victory of Russia (the Eagle) over Sweden (the Lion)

The Flag of Belgorod Region The Flag is divided into 4 equal parts by a blue cross. The first (white) quarter contains the coat-of-arms of Belgorod region.

Belgorod-the Administrative Centre of the Region Today Belgorod is the most beautiful cities in the south of Russia. It ranks first among the Russian cities with a population from 100 to 500 thousand people for its tidiness and accomplishments. The population of the city grows from year to year. Belgorod is characterized by an advantageous geographical position. The border of the Ukraine is 40 km away. This makes life in the city relatively inexpensive and very comfortable. At the end of the XX – beginning of the XXІ centuries, the residential areas of Belgorod with a population of 350 thousand,notably changed. Dozens of buildings of old Belgorod were reconstructed, hundreds of new industrial, commercial and consumer facilities, as well as housing estates, were built.

Administrative Divisions Belgorod region is administratively divided into 21 districts, which are further divided into 335 rural districts. There are 10 cities in the region, as well as 20 urban-type settlements. The main industrial centers: cities of Belgorod, Stary Oskol, Gubkin, Shebekino, Valuiki.

Climate The climate is temperate continental with a rather mild winter with snowfalls and thaws and a long summer. The coldest month is January. The warmest month is July.

Flora and Fauna The fauna of Belgorod region numbers from 10 to 15 thousand species. The most common are elk, deer, roe, brown hare, fox, marten, polecat, wolf. However, around 10% of the species require special protection.50 species are included in the Red Book. The flora feature a north forest steppe, where forest alternates with meadow steppe. More than 800 hectares of forest area are considered to be a specially protected territory due to rare plants and animals included in the Red Book.

Economics Belgorodia is a highly developed industrial and agrarian region with an economy based on tremendous mineral resources and unique black earth. The region possesses more than 40 percent of explored reserves of iron ore in the country. Today one of the priority trends in the region΄s economy is chalk mining and export. The chalk extracted on the territory of Belgorod region has no analogue in the world. Iron ore is also extracted on the territory of Belgorod region. Its deposits are estimated at billion tons, which is approximately 50% of the iron ore reserves on the planet.

Transport Belgorod region borders on the Ukraine being the gateway of Russia in the south-west. Highways located in Belgorod region lead almost to all regions of the country and states. The region has a well developed railway network, which connects Belgorodia with the largest industrial centers of Russia. Important interstate highways, connecting Moscow with the southern region of Russia and the Ukraine, also pass through Belgorod region.

Novy Oskol I live in Novy Oskol. Novy Oskol is a small provincial town. It was founded in First it was a fortress. And later it became a town « Zarev – Alekseev ».

Novy Oskol is situated in the centre of Belgorod region. It stands on the river Oskol. My town attracts with it`s green countryside and wonderful vegetation. So the air is clean and fresh and the landscape is beautiful. My town is especially nice in spring and the summer. The streets are clean and full of flower bets. Pollution is not a problem for our town.

As for the way of entertainment there are no many places to go to. You can spend your free time in amusement park, in the cinema, visiting our historical museum or library. The people in our town are kind, open and friendly. There is no much crime in my town
