Jazz Jazz was born in the USA, Louisiana, New Orleans. There were large cotton plantations. Slaves were brought from Africa to work in the fields. In Louisiana and the city of New Orleans the slave owners were French. They let the slaves and the free blacks play drums and horns. Black musicians in New Orleans combined European musical instruments and songs with African rhythms. They made a new musical style which was later called jazz. It soon became an important part of popular music in America. return back
BLUES The blues was born in the Mississipi River Delta in the early 1890s. After the Civil War, the slaves were free, but the life was not easy. In the South, work camps were formed. Black people from the camps worked on farms and build up the Mississipi river banks. On weekends, the workers got together at picnics or drinking places. Travelling black musicians with guitars entertained them. The musicians sang songs about the difficult life of the workers. Those songs were called the blues. But blues songs were not always sad. The blues was a new kind of music and soon spread all over America. return backreturn back
