These days we are all learning to speak new language. Is it English, French or Spanish? No, its Internet-speak. Our conversations are peppered with www, dot, com. Computers used to be the hobby of a minority, but now surfing the net has become an activity for young and old, male and female. Activities such as shopping or banking, which used to involved travelling to the nearest town, can now be achieved without leaving a chair, never mind stepping out of the front door. Teaching and learning using the Internet is already a reality. Although it is very convenient, there are disadvantages to the Internet revolution. While it appears to encourage more communication, it may actually cut people off from each other. Are we in danger of becoming anti-social and isolated, stuck in front of our computer screens? Already people who do not have e-male or the Internet are seen as old-fashioned. They might miss out on some special offers or invitations simply because they can not be contacted by the click of a mouse. There is a good example of the change of language usage. The word mouse is now commonly understood as an essential tool on a computer. Our childrens children will probably never give a thought to the poor small creature, which lent its name.
