G. G. Byron ( ) and Y. M. Lermontov ( ) Fates of two great poets
I am not sure that long life is desirable for one of my temper and constitutional depression of Spirits G. Byron I little lived and was not free Two captive lives can never be To tortured free one half is good I would exchange them if I could. Exchange I would for one short day, For less, for but one hour amid The jagged rocks where play I did, A child, if twere but offered me, Both Heaven and eternity!
Lermontov translated Byron's lyrics My soul is dark My soul is darkOh! quickly string The harp I yet can brook to hear; And let thy gentle fingers fling Its melting murmurs o'er mine ear. If in this heart a hope be dear, That sound shall charm it forth again If in these eyes there lurk a tear, 'Twill flowand cease to burn my brain But bid the strain be wild and deep, Nor let thy notes of joy be first I tell theeMinstrel! I must weep, Or else this heavy heart will burst For it hath been by sorrow nurst, And ached in sleepless silence long And now 'tis doom'd to know the worst, And break at onceor yield to song. М. Ю.
