The Past Simple Tense

Past Simple (Прошедшее неопределённое время) употребляется для обозначения действия, которое однократно произошло или происходит повторно в прошлом и никак не связано с настоящим.

Обстоятельства времени: Yesterday The day before yesterday Last week Last month Last year …ago Once

Affirmative sentences: Helen helps her mother every day. Helen helped her mother yesterday. They play basketball every week. They played basketball last week. The weather is fine today. The weather was fine yesterday. Pupils do their homework every day. Pupils did their homework last night.

Negative sentences: John wanted to eat an apple. John did not want to eat an apple. Children read a book yesterday. Children did not read a book yesterday. Kate was at work last night. Kate was not at work last night.

Interrogative sentences: I helped my friends to do their homework. Did you help your friends to do their homework? Sam lived in London. Did Sam live in London? She liked to smile. Did she like to smile? Mary tasted this ice-cream. Did Mary taste this ice-cream?

I visited my grandmother yesterday. When did you visit your grandmother? What did you do yesterday? Who visited your grandmother yesterday?
