Повелительные предложения в косвенной речи (Indirect Speech).

Когда прямая речь представляет собой повелительное предложение, то при обращении ее в косвенную речь производятся следующие изменения :

Если прямая речь выражает приказание, то глагол to say сказать в словах, вводящих прямую речь, заменяется глаголом to tell велеть, сказать или to order приказывать. He said, Shut the door, Ann. He told Ann to shut the door. He said to us, Go there at once! He told us to go there at once. Или He ordered us to go there at once. Если прямая речь выражает просьбу, то глагол to say заменяется глаголом to ask просить. I said to Bob, Open the window, please. I asked Bob to open the window.

Повелительное наклонение заменяется в косвенной речи инфинитивом. В косвенной речи после глаголов to tell, to order, to ask всегда следует лицо (существительное или местоимение), которому адресовано приказание (просьба ), а затем инфинитив. Отрицательная форма повелительного наклонения заменяется инфинитивом с частицей not. The woman said to the boy, Dont cry. The woman told ( asked, ordered ) the boy not to cry.

Для выражения просьбы или команды в косвенной речи часто употребляются глаголы: to beg - просить, умолять to urge - настаивать to remind - напоминать to warn - предостерегать, предупреждать to advise - советовать to recommend - рекомендовать to invite - приглашать She said, Please help me. She begged them (us) to help her.

Exercises C hange the following sentences into Indirect Speech.

A 1. I said to Jack, Please lend me your dictionary. I asked Jack to lend me his dictionary. 2. The bus-conductor said to the passengers, Dont get off the bus while it is going. The bus-conductor told the passengers not to get off the bus while it was going. 3. The old man said to the little girl, Dont run across the street. The old man told the little girl not to run across the street. 4. The angry workmen said to the manager, Pay us at once! The angry workmen ordered the manager to pay them at once. 5. The judge said to the prisoner, Stand up while I am speaking to you. The judge told the prisoner to stand up while he /she was speaking to him.

B 1. The teacher said to Mary, Clean the blackboard, please. The teacher asked Mary to clean the blackboard. 2. Marys mother said to her, Dont go out without your coat. Marys mother told her daughter not to go out without her coat. 3. The dishonest servant said to her mistress, Please forgive me. The dishonest servant asked (begged ) her mistress to forgive her. 4. Dont watch late-night horror-movies, I warned them. I warned them not to watch late-night horror-movies. 5. Dont believe everything you hear, he warned me. He warned me not to believe everything I heard. 6. Dont hurry, I said. I told them not to hurry. 7. Put your pistol on the table, said the man. The man told me to put my pistol on the table

C 1. Open the safe! the raiders ordered the bank clerk. The raiders ordered the bank clerk to open the safe. 2. Dont miss your train, she warned them. She warned them not to miss their train. 3. Buy a new car, I advised him. I advised him to buy a new car. 4. Dont drive too fast, she begged him. She begged him not to drive too fast. 5. He said, Get out of my way. He told me to get out of his way. 6. Follow that car, the detective said to the taxi-driver. I told the taxi-driver to follow the car. 7. Wait for me at the bridge, said the young man. The young man told her to wait for him at the bridge

D 1. Dont forget to feed the goldfish, Mary said to her brother. Mary told her brother not to forget to feed the goldfish. 2. Search the house, said the police sergeant. The police sergeant told his men to search the house. 3. Put down that gun. Its loaded, she warned. She told / warned him to put the gun down as it was loaded. 4. Wear a wig if you dont want to be recognized, I advised him. I advised him to wear a wig if he didnt want to be recognized. 5. Put the message into a bottle and throw it into the sea, he said.
