A bookplate, also known as ex-librīs [Latin, "from the books of..."], is usually a small print or decorative label pasted into a book, often on the inside front cover, to indicate its owner.
The simplest ex-libris is a paper label with the name of the owner of the book (sometimes in combination with a slogan or logo). Art bookplates are works printed graphics. They are created by various techniques of engraving - engraved on copper, wood or linoleum. Among the authors of artistic bookplates can be called such prominent artists as Albrecht Dürer, V.A Tabor, and many others.
Bookplates typically bear a name, motto, device, coat-of-arms, crest, badge, or any motif that relates to the owner of the book, or is requested by him from the artist or designer. The name of the owner usually follows an inscription such as "from the books of... " or "from the library of... ", or in Latin, ex-libris.... Bookplates are important evidence for the provenance of books.

Oleg Sudlenkov collected about 8000 bookplates. This is a huge number for Belarus. There are about ten people, who are fond of this art. It is very expensive.
There are the old bookplates of Radziwill, Sapieha, Baranowski in this collection.
When you take an old book-plate, you feel the story, you know, that this ex-libris was holded the treasurer of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania 300 years ago. And you realize that you have a historical document, - says Oleg Sudlenkov.
Bookplate - is the proof that years before books were really important for people. Even in ancient Egypt rolls were marked by owners. In Europe the ex-libris became popular after appearance of printing. There was a law stating that lack of bookplate made holding illegal. Later bookplates lost that meaning. On the other hand their role in art has grown.
