PALACE SQUARE

HISTORY The prehistory of the square is connected with the laying of the Admiralty Fortress-shipyard on November 5, According to the requirements of wartime, the Admiralty was surrounded by ramparts and a moat. Before him stretched a vast open space - glacis, necessary for the actions of serf artillery in the event of an enemy attack from the land.

APPEARANCE AND DEVELOPMENT OF THE AREA The basis for the construction of the Palace Square was the existing Winter Palace ( , architect BF Rastrelli). Turned to the Palace Square, the southern facade is cut by a three-part arch. In the period from 1764 to 1775, the buildings of the Free Economic Society appeared on the corner with Nevsky Prospekt (architect Vallin- Delamot, rebuilt) and the South Pavilion of the Small Hermitage (architect Felten) at the remote ends of the square.

SOVIET TIME On September 22, 1918, a plaster monument to A.N. Radishchev was erected on the Palace Square under the project of sculptor L. V.
