Stavropol region is a federal subject of Russia (a krai) in the North Caucasian Federal District. It encompasses the central part of the Fore- Caucasus and most of the northern slopes of Caucasus. It borders with Rostov Oblast, Krasnodar Krai, the Republic of Kalmykia, the Republic of Dagestan, the Chechen Republic, the Republic of North Ossetia–Alania, the Kabardino-Balkar Republic, and the Karachay–Cherkess Republic. The administrative territorial division Stavropol Krai is administratively divided into twenty-six districts (raions ) and ten cities/towns. The districts are further subdivided into nine towns of district subordinance, seven urban-type settlements, and 284 rural okrugs and stanitsa okrugs. The main cities are Stavropol, Piatigorsk, Nevinnomyssk, Kislovodsk, Essentuki, and Mineralnye Vody.

Stavropol, the capital city of the region, was founded in 1777 as one of the defense fortresses protecting the southern border of Russia. Since 1822 Stavropol – which means town of the cross – became the center of the Caucasus region. In the 18-19th centuries Stavropol was on the main post road connecting the Caucasus with central regions of European Russia, which contributed to the citys development into a large commercial and administrative center. There are two international airports in Stavropol and in Mineralnye Vody. The latter can accept airliners of all types. Railway communication between the Stavropol Territory and other parts of Russia is earned out through the mainline "Kavkazskaia - Tihoretskaia - Rostov-on-Don". The relief of the territory varies from plains in the north and north-east to the foothills and mountainous in the south and southwest.
The most prominent site is the Mineralovodskaya Sloping Plain with its so called island mountains. The slopes of the Greater Caucasus occupy the southwest of the region.
The climate is moderate continental. On the plains, winters are mild and summers are warm. The mean January temperature is – 4° or – 5°C, and – 10° or even – 20°C in the mountains. The mean July temperature ranges from 22° to 25°C.
There are many lakes in Stavropol region. Some of them are Manych, Liman, Sengileevskoye, Kravtsova.
The rivers flow into the Sea of Azov and the Caspian Sea. The largest ones are Kuban, Terek, Kuma and Kalaus.
The region has one of the richest floras and faunas in Russia. Birds are numerous.
The steppes and the mountains are inhabited by red and roe deer, wild boars, brown bears, lynx, the European wildcat, and the Altai squirrel, susliks, voles, hamsters, and jerboas. Wildlife is protected in the Teberda Preserve in the mountains and in the Caucasian Preserve, which extends into Stavropol Krai. Fauna

The industry is presented by mechanic engineering, oil production and oil refining, food and chemical branches.
The agriculture is highly diversified. It is presented by crops and sunflower growing. Rice farming was recently introduced in the west and southeast. The total grain harvest in 2016 was 9.2 million tons, last year it was 8.2 million tons. Agriculture is one of the most important branches of Stavropol province economics, over 150,000 people are busy in agriculture.
In Stavropol region different kinds of vegetables, fruit, grapes, and melons are grown.
The traditional branches in animal husbandry are fine-wool sheep-breeding, cattle-breeding, poultry farming, pig-breeding and bee-keeping. They are developed last years. Cattle are raised for meat and milk.
The town is located in the center of the Fore-Caucasus. It is on the east side of the extensive picturesque Stavropol plateau. It is like a green island, surrounded in woods and located among endless steppes. Stavropol is one of the greenest towns of Russia. Stavropol is a town of students and science. There are many colleges and higher educational institutions there. Stavropol is the center of cultural life. There are many historical monuments which reflect the outstanding events of the town. The town is also the center of the Stavropol and Vladikavkaz Eparchy of Russian Orthodox Church. There are many churches and cathedrals in the town. In the streets there are a lot of trees and flower-beds. From early spring till late autumn visitors may enjoy the sights and the scenes of exotic flowers in blossom. Curing potential of these mineral springs has been known by the local population for a long time. Legends combining both truth and fantasy tell about it, too. Such legends echo reflected in the name of one popular local mineral water - narzan. This word can be translated into Russian as Hercules beverage, Water of Hercules. Caucasian Mineralnye Vody is the largest curing resort region in the Russian Federation which doesnt have any analogy either in Europe or Asia in variety, content, quantity and value.
