Nauryz is official holiday in the Republic of Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenia, Azerbaijan and Tadjikistan. During the course of history Nauryz became a symbolic Kazakh New Year in Kazakhstan. Nowadays it is one of the most favourite holidays in Kazakhstan. Kazakhs also often refer to Nauryz as Ulystin uly kuni which means the great day of the nation. Nauryz remains also a strong tradition in the countries of Central Asia as well as in Afghanistan, Iran and Azerbaijan. The present day name of Nauryz derives from the Persian Novruz translated as a new day. The ancient festival of spring and labor, which arose among many peoples of the East, celebrated on the day of the spring equinox, on March 22. To Nauryz each family prepared a ritual dish - Nauryz's skin (a soup made with sour milk from seven ingredients) is a symbol of prosperity and well-being.
On the day of Nauryz everyone tried to be in good spirits, at a meeting they encased each other in embraces, expressed their very best wishes. On the day of the celebration, theatrical performances and scenes from the life of the people are played, aytys are held - verbal contests of akyns (poets-improvizators) accompanied by dombra. The winner is the one who will better glorify Good! Young people are going to the swing - altybakan. All sing, dance, have fun, play national games. Traditions of Nauryz passed from generation to generation and retained their basic content today
On Nauryz they drink kumys – dairy product made of horse milk. Traditionally on this day they congratulate by saying Koktem tudi! Also there are many contests of wit-poets held on this holiday, that are called "akins" in Kazakhstan; the feast cannot be without national contests among which is national wrestling "kazaksha-gures", logic game called "toguz kumalak" and of course horse games "kyz- kuu" and "bayga". Theatrical staged performances are played in the streets. Another old Nauryz tradition is "altybakan", where girls and boys gather together to socialize and ride on the swings
For kazakhs Nauryz is symbol of spring renew, grand of love, fertility and friendship. In old days before Nauryz arrival people had turned out their houses and farm, for holidays name after had planted trees and flowers. It is believed, that if Nauryz is coming in to clear home to good owner, illnesses, failures, hardships are comed around the side of.
. NAURYZ KOZHE On Nauryz it is a must to have a traditional festive dish nauryz-koje on the table. Kazakhs believe that one should eat much of this dish on Nauryz, then your year will be in prosperity. Nauryz-koje is a nutritional rich soup that is cooked from 7 ingredients: meat, water, flour, butter, millet (could be replaced with rice or corn), salt and milk. Each component of the dish symbolizes one of the seven life beginnings: growth, luck, happiness, wealth, health, wisdom and sky auspices. Nauryz is full of symbols. So, the number 7 has its special meaning in celebrating Nauryz – seven ingredients in nauryz-koje, that is afterwards poured into seven bowls and is laid in front of wise old men-aksakals. Each person should invite seven guests and should visit other seven houses
* KYDYR ATA * The holy old man, the traditional character of the theatrical holiday Nauryz-meiramy, one of his symbols. It was on the March night, according to Kazakh mythology, that the land was bypassed by the holy elder Kydyr Ata, a half-god, a wise magician, capable of melting a stone and turning it into a clearing dotted with tulips or snowdrops.
