Knew ancient Greek, Latin, French, German and Italian. Its main purpose is seen in the deliverance of people from sickness and death. At the age of 20 decided to become a nurse, but her dream could be realized only through 13 years, as the nursing profession in England was infamous. Parents and relatives were categorically against this decision.
In 1860 Florence opened Nightingales test school for nurses at St. Thomas hospital in London, giving the organization the money raised by subscription in England. Soon graduates of this school have begun to create similar facilities at other hospitals and even in other countries.
The Crimean war made Florence a national heroine. Returning from the front the soldiers told of her legend, calling her "the lady with the lamp" because at night with lamp in hand, she avoided the chamber with the patients.
