18 May 1991 made a space flight on the Mir space station aboard the spacecraft Soyuz TM-12 together with A. Artsebarsky and S. Krikalev. In 1993, for participation in space flight, Helen Sharman was awarded the title of Chevalier of the Order of the British Empire.
Sharman has implemented in- orbit biological and chemical experiments, and also held a series of schools for English lessons.
The program of the ninth main expedition consisted of experiments in astronomy, biology, chemistry, Earth observation, space engineering, materials science and medicine.
