Kindergarten -Age 3 to 6 -not obligatory
Elementary school (Grundschule) -Ages 6 to 9 (grades 1-4) -after the 4th grade children are separated: Hauptschule, Realschule or Gymnasium (Secondary school)
Hauptschule -Ages (grades 5-9) -leads to part-time enrollment in a vocational school until the age of 18.
Realschule - grades 5-10 in most states
Gymnasium -a diploma called the Abitur
Gesamtschule (comprehensive school) -mixture of the Realschule and Gymnasium Students of all academic levels learn together until the 10th grade is completed. After 10th grade all students achieve the so-called mittlere Reife. They have got the choice either to quit school and start an apprenticeship or to stay at the Gesamtschule to complete either theAbitur or the so-called Fachabitur which gives access to theFachhochschule.
Berufsschule (professional school) -combine part-time practical and theoretical education -Hauptschule\Realschule -> Vocational Training -> Berufsschule -Students are required to study at minimum one foreign language for at least five years.
