Russian cinematography has a very long history. Before1908 Russian cinema makers usually showed the European films and documentary films about Tsars family. In 1908 the first Russian film Stenka Razin was created by A. Drankov. It became popular in a very short time.

In august 1919 the Russian cinematography became the property of the state. In 1925 the Battleship Potemkin film was created by Eisenstein. In 1926 this film was called the best film of the year by the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. It is interesting that Eisenstein colored the red flag in the film on his own. The film became sound film in 1930.

Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson is a film for television too. It is based on the novels by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. It is detective story. It is interesting that V. Livanov who acted Holmes got The Medal of the British Empire as the best Holmes.
