The first edition appeared on February 1, It was called the « New English Dictionary on Historical Principles » In 1895 the title "The Oxford English Dictionary appeared on the cover.
The publication contained 10 volumes and it came out until In 1933 the dictionary had been redesigned and contained 12 volumes with a single-volume supplement. Then it found its present name - the "Oxford English Dictionary." Between 1972 and 1986 four more volumes were added. The second edition of the dictionary which had 20 volumes was published in 1989.
