Olympic Games are the greatest international sports games in the world. The first Olympic Games were held at the foot of Mount Olympus to honor the Greek chief Gog, Zeus. The Greeks emphasized physical fitness, and strength in their education of youth. Therefore competitions in running, jumping, discus and javelin throwing, boxing and horse and chariot racing were held and the winners competed every four years at Mount Olympus. Originally these were held as games of friendship, and any wars were halted to allow the games take place. In 394 A.D. the games were abolished and were not renewed until many centuries later.
Modern Olympic Games came in 1896, due to the French educator Baron Pierre de Coubertin. The first Olympiad was held in Athens. Some events, like marathon race, have been added, and the inclusion of women, and also the series of winter sports. Since they have been staged every fourth year, except during World War I and World War II (1916, 1940, 1944). In 1896 the International Olympic Committee was set up.
The Olympic flag. The Olympic flag, which appeared in Olympic competition for the first time at Antwerp in 1920, has a white background with no border. In the center there five rings whose colours are blue, yellow, black, green and red. Each ring represents one of the five continents.
The Olympic Flame. The flame is carried hand- to- hand by relays of runners from the original site of the OLYMPIC Games at Olympia to the stadium of the games. As a symbol of peace among men the flame represents the basic spiritual significance of this classic competition.
