Edmonton, Alberta Edmonton began as a fur- trading post in the late 1700s, growing when used as an outfitting point for gold prospectors heading north to the Klondike during the late 1800s. Edmontons population boomed in the 1950s when large mineral and petroleum reserves were discovered and mined near the city. Today Edmonton is a major commercial and manufacturing center, and, as the provincial capital of Alberta, a location of government and administrative agencies.
Toronto, Ontario Ontario is the most urbanized Canadian province, with more than four- fifths of its people living in urban areas. Toronto, the provincial capital, is the most populous city in Ontario and Canadas leading manufacturing center.
Winter Wheat Harvest, Ontario Wheat and other grains account for about one-half of Canadas annual agricultural exports, making the grain industry the countrys leading agricultural sector. Here, wheat is harvested near Belton, a town in southeastern Ontario.
Jacques Cartier In 1534 King Francis I sent French explorer Jacques Cartier to find a northwest passage to the Spice Islands. Cartier explored the Gulf of Saint Lawrence and regions now known as Newfoundland, New Brunswick, Quebec, and Montreal. Much of the French claim to Canada was based on Cartiers explorations.
