Google began in January 1996 as a research project named BackRub.
August Sun co-founder Andy Bechtolsheim writes a check for $100,000 to an entity that doesn't exist yet: a company called Google Inc. September Google Inc. was incorporated at a friend's garage in Menlo Park, California.

Gmail is a free webmail, POP3, and IMAP service provided by Google. Gmail was launched on April 1, 2004 as beta. The service was upgraded from beta status on July 7, 2009.
The service currently offers over 7350 MB of free storage. Gmail known as Google Mail in Germany, Austria and the United Kingdom as trademark G-mail has been registered earlier.
