93% of children attend state schools. All state schools in Britain are free, and schools provide their pupils with books and equipment for their studies. State secondary schools are for children aged fall into three main types: secondary modern, grammar and comprehensive.

The comprehensive system aims to develop the gifts of all children to the full. Comprehensive schools are schools which take children of all abilities so there are no entrance exams.

About 4% of students attend grammar schools, which they enter at age 11 on the basis of their abilities. Children have to pass a selection test to get in. Grammar schools offer a mainly academic education for the 11 to 18 age group Schoolmasters and mistresses of Grammar schools wear academic gowns and academic caps, children wear uniform with a school badge

Secondary modern schools concentrate on practical work: metal and woodwork, domestic science and cooking. The children leave school at 15 with a certificate of written evidence of their studies.

Private schools in Britain and Wales are very expensive and they are attended by about 5% of the school population. The education in public schools is of high quality, the discipline is very strict. Most of private schools are either for boys or girls. Private schools are famous not only for their perfect education but also for the right friends and contacts which are useful and successful future. In some British schools uniform are worn by all the pupils, in others the children can wear what they want to. Some public schools in Britain, such as Eton, have uniforms based on what was worn over a hundred years ago. Some private schools are very famous such as Eton, Harrow, Rugby and Winchester. Harrow school is famous as the place where Winston Churchill was educated, as well as six other Prime Ministers of Great Britain, the poet Lord Byron and many other prominent people. At the age of 11 students pass the Eleven –Plus examination of three papers : English, Arithmetic and Intelligent Test At the age of 16, pupils take their GCSE exams called O-levels. (English, French, Math or GNVQ _ General National Vocational Qualifications –design, business and tourism) Those who get good grades can stay on at school go into the sixth form or a six form college Thus children can prepare for a national exam called A-level(Advanced Level) at 18. A person needs A level to enter a university.
