Hello, dear friends! We welcome you to London on a sightseeing tour. London is a very old city. Roman troops conquered south-east England in the summer of AD 43, the Emperor Claudius and his white elephants crossed the Thames at the site of London. They called the place Londinium,and it became the capital of Britain. London stands on the River Thames which has played a big role in the history of the city. Today London is the capital of the country, a huge port and one of the most beautiful and interesting cities in the world with a population of over 7 million people.
Now, we are coming to Trafalgar Square. The square was named in commemoration of the victorious naval battle of Trafalgar in 1805.Trafalgar square is one of the busiest places in London. The square is the place where demonstrations and mass rallies for peace, disarmaments and for working peoples rights are held. At weekends Londoners love to come to the square to feed the pigeons.
This is a column to admiral Nelson. The column is over 170 feet high with the statue of Nelson. Nelsons statue is over 16 feet high, about three times his real height.
Hyde Park is the largest park in the West End of London. In the 19 th century it became a popular place for public meetings. The park has Speakers Corner where anyone can make a speech about anything they want. It is a very democratic park.
William 1 built the White Tower in the Tower of London in The Tower was a fortress, then a palace, then a prison. The Crown Jewels are in the Tower of London now. Yeoman Warders( called Beefeaters) guard the Tower.
Big Ben is high above the town, It is a symbol of the Crown. Its sight is handsome in the noon. At night, its shining like a moon. It has as many as four faces. The deep voices heard in many places Its work is industrious, in fact. It tells the time to everyone, The job is said to be well- done. Sometimes its stroke is like a call Of old Sir Benjamin Hall.
It is a square in the central part of London. In the square you can see people of many nationalities. Piccadilly Circus is the meeting-point of six streets. Londons famous restaurants and best-known theatres and cinemas are on Piccadilly Circus.
