Thomas Gainsborough

Thomas Gainsborough is one of greatest portrait and landscape painters of the world. He was born at Sudbury, Suffolk, in a large family. Gainsborough is often compared with Reynolds. His style is also influenced by the Dutch masters and Van Dyck. All the predecessors and contemporaries of Gainsborough followed the tradition of painting imaginary Italian scenery in the style of Claude de Lorrain. Gainsborough was the first English who broke this tradition. He worked out his personal style and represented the landscapes of his own country. Among Gainsborought`s most famous portraits are the portrait of Mrs. Siddons,a famous actress in a blue dress, and Blue Boy- a picture of a boy in a blue costume. This is a portrait of Mrs. Sarah Siddons (1785)

Salvador Dali 1904 – 1989

Dali was the famous Spanish surrealist artist. He was born in a village near Barcelona. In 1021 he entered the Fine Art School of Madrid. The young artist was a very peculiar person. He dressed eccentrically and behaved badly. In 1925 he failed his examinations and was expelled from school. In Madrid he met the film - maker Luis Bucuel. In 1929 Dali moved to Paris. There he joined Surrealist Movement. Salvador was a creator of a new style in painting. He himself called his pictures hand - painted dream photo – graphs. The style made him famouse

Dali `s picture are full of fantastic visions. Ordinary object are pained as though they are soft as in The Persistence of memory in the Museum of Modern Art in.New York. Much of his work is quite starling. The Persistence of memory (1931)

Dali also wrote and illustrated books, made films, designed decorations, jewelry and murals. All his life he kept his reputation of an eccentric person. He himself created his image, his appearance was a work of art in itself. Figure at a Window

His work ranged from realistic portraiture to comic strip-like series of pictures called "modern moral subjects". Knowledge of his work is so pervasive that satirical political illustrations in this style are often referred to as "Hogarthian."
