Thomas Gainsborough
Thomas Gainsborough is one of greatest portrait and landscape painters of the world. He was born at Sudbury, Suffolk, in a large family. Gainsborough is often compared with Reynolds. His style is also influenced by the Dutch masters and Van Dyck. All the predecessors and contemporaries of Gainsborough followed the tradition of painting imaginary Italian scenery in the style of Claude de Lorrain. Gainsborough was the first English who broke this tradition. He worked out his personal style and represented the landscapes of his own country. He is famous for the elegance of his portraits painted in clear tones. Thomas Gainsborough
