(MAY 21, 1960, LENINGRAD, USSR) - A FAMOUS SOVIET SWIMMER, FOUR-TIME OLYMPIC GOLD MEDALIST AND MULTIPLE WORLD CHAMPION, EUROPEAN AND WORLD RECORD HOLDER. HONORED MASTER OF SPORTS OF THE USSR (1978)
STARTED TRAINING IN 1968 AT THE AGE OF 8 YEARS OLD IG GLEB PETROV. SINCE 1973, TRAINED WITH IGOR M. KOSHKIN.
IN 1976 HE MADE HIS DEBUT AT AGE 16 AT THE OLYMPIC GAMES IN MONTREAL, TOOK 5TH PLACE IN THE FINAL 1500 METERS, SETTING A RECORD IN EUROPE.
DURING HIS SPORTS CAREER VLADIMIR SALNIKOV OVERCAME THE DISTANCE EQUAL TO THE LENGTH OF THE EQUATOR.
FOR OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENTS IN SPORTS, HE WAS AWARDED THE ORDER OF LENIN (1985), OCTOBER REVOLUTION (1988), THE RED BANNER OF LABOR (1980).
