Belfast is the capital and the largest city in Northern Ireland. By its population, it is the 14th largest city in the United Kingdom and the 2nd largest one on the Island of Ireland. The name Belfast is derived from the Irish Béal Feirsde, which was later spelled Béal Feirste.
Government Belfast was granted the official city status by Queen Victoria in Since 1973 it has been a local government district under the local administration - Belfast City Council. Belfast is represented in both: the British House of Commons and in the Northern Ireland Assembly.
Climate Belfast has a temperate climate. Typically it snows fewer than 10 days a year. The city is also known for its warmth during the winter months. In February, for example, temperatures can rise 17 °C.
