L o g o Your home assignment Read the text The Candle The candle as a source of light has a long history. It is a very old source of light. It is one of the oldest in history. The Phoenicians, those first adventurers of the high seas, invented the wax candle about 200 B.C. The candle was better than the earlier sources of light: man could easily make it, keep for future, use and carry it with him. However, the candle did not become a popular source of light until about the 12 century. In the earliest days of American colonies early to bed was the rule. The colonists had few candles and their price was high. They often used candle-wood, that is pieces of wood, in rude holders or the pioneer mother put a piece of cloth in a rude vessel of fat and burned it. Later men found whale oil and used it for candles. At first they made all candles by hand, then they used forms which families loaned from house to house. As the need became greater, traveling merchants began to sell candles. They went from house to house making candles in peoples homes, selling them, bringing news and stories from neighboring villages. The colonists liked to see these merchants and listen to their stories and news. Soon Americans began to build factories in New England and candles became the main source of light in the homes.
