Dubai City is located on the shores of the Persian Gulf. It is the capital of Dubai which is one of seven "Emirates" or states that form a country known as the United Arab Emirates. The 'Emirate of Dubai' is about the size of America's Rhode Island. Dubai City does not have a particularly long history. Since it is located in an unbelievably harsh terrain, there have been very few battles fought here since no one wanted any part of this land! Dubai first gained distinction in the 1800s as a stopover for ships making their way to and from England to India. Dubai was under the protection of the British Empire until 1971 when Britain left the area peacefully. Shortly after, oil was discovered just off the coast. Suddenly Dubai was rich beyond anyone's wildest imagination. It was like winning the lottery. eran Dubai City, United Arab Emirates
